For nursery rhyme week in Baby Room at The Court House, we are focusing on incorporating our favourite rhymes into our play. We have started the week with ‘5 Currant Buns’ as we focus on the mathematical side of the nursery rhyme by counting our currant buns. We looked at shape, space, and measure as we made our currant buns by rolling the dough into spheres. We made 3D and 2D models as we used the laminated cards as guides. This got our fine motor muscles moving and developed our control as we used a rolling motion to create cherries on top of our currant buns. We counted as we went and looked at the number on the coin to pay for our currant buns – talking about how we can use money to exchange for our buns.
We then sang the song and also added this into our circle time. This sparked our early literacy and language acquisition, as we used repetition for sounds and words. The children have really amazed us with their listening skills as they are able to listen out for their name and hold their hand out for their exchange of a currant bun and coin, using their imagination to pretend.
