With Chinese New Year fast approaching, at The Priory we started making our own decorations to celebrate! Our chosen craft was Chinese Lanterns. The children chose their favourite coloured card, scissors and a pen so they were ready to get started. I demonstrated to the children how to hold their piece of paper landscape and explained that the long sides of the paper should be at the top and bottom and the short sides should be on the sides. The children cut along a straight line to remove a small piece of card which they would need to keep safe as this was going to be used as a handle. We folded the piece of card in half, making sure both sides of the card matched, and the halves were of equal size. The children cut their own patterns into the lantern and stuck the sides together with sticky tape while I facilitated this by holding the card in place. The children really enjoyed making these!
