At The Priory, we have been following the children’s interest in cars and learning about speed and the different road signs we may see whilst on the road. First, I observed 2 children playing with cars on our extendable track. We discussed how fast their cars might be travelling in miles per hour (mph) and I provided some examples of different speed limits such as 70mph on the motorway. We decided to extend their learning even further and found some road signs in the basement. We set them up on our patio area so the children could explore this whilst on the bikes. Some children pretended to be traffic officers and stood by the signs giving each other directions and others showed good attention and listening to follow these instructions. This developed their gross motor skills, manoeuvring around obstacles and altering their speed depending on the environment. After lunch, we offered them the chance to design their own signs using cardboard and paint them. We researched different road signs, and the children discussed the different shapes signs are and their different meanings. The children practised their fine motor skills through maintaining a strong grip of the tools when cutting and painting. This activity also looked at building the children’s understanding of the world and the different meanings of these road signs.
