In Baby Room at the Court House, we have been in the spooky spirit with costumes and activities. The children all arrived in costume ready for some spooky and seasonal fun and activities.
We started the morning with orange play dough and foam shapes to design our own 2D pumpkin. We used this time to focus on motor muscle development and coordination as we rolled the dough into balls with the song ‘roly poly’ in mind for the motion of our hand and arm movements. The children added black foam shapes in a pattern of their choice to create a design/face for their play pumpkins. We really enjoyed seeing all of the funky faces the children had come up with and it was an opportunity for language with mathematics as we discussed shape, space, and measure.
We then used spooky googly eyes to decorate our pumpkin, as we felt this was a very open activity as all children were able to participate either by themselves, or with an adult’s support – again, focusing on hand eye coordination in the fine motor muscles.
After this, we went into the garden to play with some green slime and spiders – a really fun and unusual sensory experience. We will be carving and decorating our pumpkin this afternoon with ‘Harvest’ in mind as we make links. We have really enjoyed seeing the engagement from the children and discussion sparked from the costumes – we can’t wait to carry the fun on into the rest of the week.
