In the Baby Room at the Court House this week, we are looking at Remembrance Day. We have made an early start as we are going to be spending this and next week adding elements of Remembrance Day into our play. We started off this week with a Remembrance poppy in our tuff tray – focusing on colours. We painted the tuff tray and added found objects in the Baby Room that match the colours, for the children to see the links between the colours as well as various shades – an understanding of the world as well as art and design (EYFS). We will be encouraging the children throughout the day to find other objects in the room and add it to the tuff tray so we can look at if they match to the colours in the tray – this is great for getting the children’s cognitive development going as they have to explore the room and make those links. We will also be using this opportunity to talk about shapes as we look at the objects – adding an element of mathematics and also linking to literacy as we look at the environmental print which is found within the tray.
We will be using this colour and shape recognition throughout the whole day as we bring this activity outside to the garden to extend it further, and also look at the importance of this day – using simple sentences for the children to learn about Remembrance day.
