It’s Science Week! Baby Room at The Court House have enjoyed exploring the weather and seasonal elements as we discuss changes, growth, and decay in the environment (which is part of the EYFS). The Baby Room had explored the weather recently in their learning, and so what better way to extend it than through science.
We started the morning with a tuff tray that included textures and materials to spark our senses. We spoke about the colours, sound of the materials as we manipulated them, as well as shapes.
We then got hands-on with some water play, adding different media to create different outcomes – such as mirror pebbles to see if they floated or sunk – making links to the sun as we spoke about how the light reflected.
In another tray, we had some gloop (which is made of cornflour and water). We added different colours of the rainbow on top of the gloop to discuss colour mixing – making links to the weather and how we can make a rainbow – just like how a wet and sunny day at the same time can create a rainbow in the sky. The children used their fine and gross motor muscles to explore this as they used a palmar grasp and pincer grip to pull at the gloop and let it drop from a height. The children quickly found that it was tricky to move the gloop as we manipulated it more, as it became less of a liquid and more of a solid. We held it from a height and saw it quickly transform back to a liquid from a solid. We added positional and scientific language to further our vocabulary and play.
We are loving Science Week so far and can’t wait to explore more to test our knowledge!
