The Baby Room at the Court House spent time recently celebrating VE Day. They made some blue and red playdough to learn about our British flag. The children used their fine motor skills to manipulate the playdough into different shapes to add meaning. The grown ups modelled this by making historic figures, which the children mirrored in their own play. They then mixed the playdough to experiment with colour mixing and made links to one of our core books – ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’ as it has the same colours of red and blue which then made purple.
After this, they made some crowns for their tea party that afternoon. The children used glue with plenty of red, white, and blue collage pieces to create a beautiful crown with plenty of colour! This encouraged their physical fine motor muscle development as they used a pincer grip to pick up the pieces to stick in the glue. They took the opportunity to make links with the colours to the flag as well as other things we can spot that are the same colour, referring back to our playdough.
Whilst this was happening, Josie came in from the Two’s to do some baking of scones for the afternoon tea party. The children really enjoyed helping Josie make these, as they were able to look at the process and sequencing of events to create something delicious to eat. The children helped Josie to weigh out the ingredients – paying attention to number recognition with early mathematics, as well as a bit of early science through mixing to combine their ingredients, looking at how things change through manipulation. Josie added red and blue food colouring to extend their other colour mixing activities further and the children were amazed by how the scones had turned out after they had rolled the different colours together to get a marble effect.
The children were so excited to eat their scones at afternoon snack and so we had a feast of sandwiches, scones, and fruit for our little picnic tea.
We had a lovely day celebrating VE day and look forward to celebrating more events in the future with the children to learn about our history and British Values.
