At The Court House last week, the whole nursery was busy with dinosaur activities! In Baby Room, we started the week by incorporating small world dinosaurs into our sand play as this has been a media of interest recently. We encouraged the children to look at the marks the dinosaurs left with their feet in the sand as well as the names of different types of dinosaurs. The children were very good at showing off their biggest ‘roar’!
We then made our very own salt dough fossils to extend our sand play further and develop our palmar grasp and coordination as we used paint brushes to sweep off the sand and inspect our findings. The children were engaged in this activity as they saw the process by being involved in its crafting sequencing – supporting mathematics with sequencing as well as shape, space, and measure as we amend meanings to marks/shapes.
With all of this, we looked at our core book ‘Zog’ as we moved on to dragons and did some painting mark making with dinosaur feet as well as some collage making – we made this into a life size Zog with our big pieces of card. We spent time looking at the colours of the collage pieces with correlating Makaton signs as well as developing our pincer grip.
We look forward to doing more activities of this theme as the children really showed a high level of involvement and enjoyment.
