Bristol Childcare is proud to announce that it is working with waste disposal company Green Bottoms to organise the recycling of nappies used at its nurseries, and support families in taking part in a trial scheme in Bristol to recycle nappies.
Green Bottoms has partnered with Pura NappiCycle to organise for nappies to be recycled at the nappy recycling plant in South Wales.
The trial in Bristol will run for a year and aims to recycle 1 million nappies. The cellulose fibre recovered from the nappies is used in the manufacture of acoustic panelling, in-store signage and road surfacing.
Bristol Childcare is taking part in 3 ways:
- All nappies used in our nurseries are collected by Green Bottoms. These will now all be recycled as part of the trial scheme.
- Families at Mornington House in Clifton and The Court House in Knowle are being offered the chance to take part in the trial, with nappies being collected from their homes for recycling.
- Families at The Priory are being offered the opportunity to bring their nappies to the nursery which will become a hub for Green Bottoms to collect these additional nappies alongside the nursery collection.
In these ways, the Bristol Childcare community will be contributing to the trial which is aiming to help councils understand how they can best avoid sending nappies to landfill.
Saffia Bullock, Managing Director of Bristol Childcare says “We have been working with Green Bottoms for years as we liked that they were taking the nappies to an “energy from waste” facility rather than landfill. Being part of this trial is the next step for us as it’s part of our ethos to continually evaluate how we can best reduce our environmental impact, but also support parents to do this too. Nappies have a huge impact, so as a childcare company, we are really pleased to be doing all we can to reduce this waste in productive ways.
