We had a very busy Space Week at The Court House! We used some of our new silicone spades and containers to talk about shape, space and measure and early science as we poured and measured the volume of water. This also added an element of art and design as we mixed colours. Chloƫ set this up with some of the children to see the change in the water when adding different media and it definitely encouraged them to explore.
Georgia led a great activity which extended this as she hid our planet flash cards under a glass container of galaxy water and guided a glass tumbler on top to find planets amongst space. The children were really immersed in this experience and paid attention to detail as we spoke about the colours of the planets.
We updated our learning wall with our planet work of arts as we span coloured paint through the salad spinner to create a planet marble effect. The children really enjoyed the process, as well as the end result, and it certainly got those motor muscles moving with control as we used various speeds to spin it at.
To end the week, we had a space tray setup by Juliette with a lunar landing as we looked at the textures of balls as the planets and Chloe doing some moon painting. We spoke about how the small world people were astronauts that explore space and extended this by talking about our mummy and daddy’s jobs. We also then created our moons through white paint, glitter, and tinfoil – focusing how our media can alter our experiences with the foil creating the craters on the moon.
We really enjoyed space week and look forward to more themed play and activities.
