To celebrate The Olympics, the Baby Room at The Court House have participated in making their own Olympic torches! We started in the garden with some yellow and red paint where I then asked the children to help mix the 2 colours in the tray to create an orange colour. The children used their hands to rub together and squeeze the paint, creating a sensory experience as we discuss our movement and what we can feel. I then guided the children to stamp their hand onto their paper to create their flames and we then washed our hands applied some glitter. This was an experience for sequencing as we completed a process and discussed order. The children enjoyed touching the paint and rubbing their hands and it was a good opportunity for language as we use adjectives to describe our experience. It also met the EYFS Art and Design as well as the Characteristics of Effective Learning to learn through trial and error through experimentation. This also was relative to British Values as we spoke about what is happening at the moment for us to celebrate.
In the afternoon, we set out a small obstacle course for the children to explore. This supported their physical development as we had a climbing slide to support gross motor muscle movement and coordination. We also had bean bags and mini balls to practice our throwing. The children really enjoyed the obstacle course, especially the slide on the climbing side as we have been practising our gross motor movement at the moment by exploring outside and different equipment inside – the ball pit, slide, climbing frame and parachute etc. We look forward to continuing to find ways to celebrate the Olympics through the week as we find different ways to express ourselves through movement (EYFS).
