Vulnerable Adults Policy

The aim of this policy is to demonstrate how we will support vulnerable adults.

  1. Vulnerable adults may be a member of staff or the parent/carer of a child attending one of our nurseries.

  1. The nursery manager must inform the Managing Director as soon as possible about any concerns regarding vulnerable adults so that the Managing Director can support.

  1. If we have concerns about an adult, we will find or create an opportunity to talk to them alone and confidentially. We will ask them if they are okay or if we can help. We will listen to what they say sensitively and do all we can to help them find appropriate support. We will refer to local authority guidance as appropriate. See Appendix 3 of the Safeguarding Policy.

  1. Where the vulnerable adult is a member of staff, all issues will be dealt with in accordance with the appropriate policy in the Staff Handbook, for example Bereavement, Disability, Stress. We will offer support through our ongoing supervision programme and help them find appropriate support from another agency or professional.

  1. Where the vulnerable adult is a parent, we will offer support by listening to concerns and giving help where we are able. This may be by reassuring them about their child’s development, or offering advice on aspects of parenting such as potty training or speech or helping them find appropriate support from another agency or professional.

  1. If the vulnerable adult is suffering abuse, we will refer to local authority guidance to ascertain how the person should best find help and support. See Appendix 3 of the Safeguarding Policy.

  1. Where the parent is aged under 18, we will offer support as above and also liaise with the Local Authority Safeguarding Board where appropriate or necessary, in line with our Safeguarding Policy.

  1. We will be aware of “families in need” and will offer appropriate support through co-ordinating with Children’s Centres and health visitors.

  1. All conversations must be recorded and signed using an Important Conversations Form. We will be mindful of privacy and confidentiality but will not promise the person that we will not tell anyone else as we may need to gain professional support or refer safeguarding concerns about a child in accordance with our Safeguarding Policy. We will attempt to obtain the adult’s permission for referral where safe and appropriate.
